"Sethe had the amazing luck of six whole years of marriage to "somebody" son who had fathered everyone of her children. a blessing she was reckless enough to take for granted, lean on, as though sweet home really was one. As though a handful myrtle stuck in the handle of a pressing iron propped against the door in the whitewoman's kitchen could make it hers. As though mint sprig in the mouth changed the breath as well as its odor. A bigger fool never lived"(28).
Back when slavery was allowed in the United States, a common idea for African Americans was to run away to the North to escape the harsh life of slavery. Sethe had children of her own but with a man who “fathered everyone of her children”(28) but a “bigger fool never lived”(28). Sethe and her husband had attempted to run away from their plantation, but Sethe was caught causing them to be separated and even after Slavery had ended, the father did not go back to search for her. The idea of freedom was stronger for African Americans who went through slavery that when the opportunity arose, they will take it and not look back.
I find this really cool. I really like how you are doing a close reading of the world "Myrtle" itself and drawing a conclusion from the whole passage. I know that if I was reading this passage I wouldn't be able to catch the significance of the word in the text.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Eli. This is really what close reading is about. You were able to pick a part one word in a passage, and draw valid, telling, and helpful information from it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Cliona and Eli, you have made the closest reading possible and successfully analyzed the symbolism of one important word. I can't wait to read about your next word
ReplyDeleteI really like how you chose to focus on one word. I think that it was interesting how you picked one word and were able to have that one word tie back to the entire passage as well as draw a conclusion about the entire passage just from the analyzation of that one specific word.
ReplyDeleteI also like how you chose one word to focus on, because it directly ties back to the entire passage and gave a whole bunch of different meanings to the text.
ReplyDeleteWow! You did a good job focusing on one word and tying back to the passage as a whole. I never thought of it the way you did.
