Why did I chose the Psychoanalytic lens?
One of the classes that changed my perspective on the human mind is Psychology. It discovers and unleashes the big questions we have on human behavior. During the time that Beloved takes place, it contains evidence how the environment around us really shapes our lives.
All the lenses would be really interesting ,but this one especially would really go in depth in the thought process. It also would be a way to challenge myself to see how can I connect these thoughts to the time period. I always feel that you can get more out of a book from what the characters are thinking. If you put yourself in there shoes and try to understand them and their motivation, desires, fears, need and conflicts that there are driven by. In this case we are the outsiders looking into this setting and observing the characters. Along the way we discover fears of loss which is primarily a big them that I will be talking about in the novel.
In all I believe that it is important out of these characters is by looking at what characters represents and thought process to get a message from the story. Some topics that I will be discussing are the id, ego, and the superego that all have to do with the human process of consciousness. Another part would be the memory and trauma that the people go through during this time period. I will be looking also through a historical lens because it is important to take in account a different mindset in that time period where slavery existed. I really hope you find my blog interesting and keep reading more!!
This is Sigmund Freud the father of psychoanalysis. "Freud maintained that our desires and our unconscious conflicts give rise to three areas of the mind that wrestle for dominance as we grow from infancy, to childhood, to adulthood".
Jeanette to me it is really interesting how you were able to take a challenge on writing "Beloved" under the psychoanalytic lens.Being able to relate it to psychology class is interesting I have not taken this course but being able to understand ones mind while reading this novel should be helpful, great overall organization of your blog.
ReplyDeleteYou explain as to why this lens is helpful to understand the book and the characters, Beloved is not all about what you read its much more than that and I very much agree with you that to truly understand this book, you must know what those characters have gone through and what happened to them that makes them, them.
ReplyDeleteI think your blog posts will be very interesting, as you incorporate what it means to have an ego and how the contrast in how a character presents themselves mentally, physically. I would like to see Beloved from eyes of the characters, and I think your blog posts will help me grasp their internal struggles that may not seem apparent in the novel
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your explanation on why you chose the psychoanalytical lens. It was interesting to see how reading a book through this lens can be much more easier to understand since you need to pay attention to specific behavior from all characters.
ReplyDeleteI also chose the psychoanalyitical lens for the same reasons. I find it interesting to go into a person's mind and think about how and why a person thinks and acts a certain way. I beleive that a person's personality is linked with how they were raised and what they have experienced in the past. I beleieve that these events are what grow a person to view evets in their own way and cause them to act on these events in a certain way. I wish I had taken the psychology class with you, it seems really fun.
